Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Dancing at Dancesmiths' Fred Astaire Dance Studio is just a phone call away 901-213-9393. Private lessons can be scheduled anytime during business hours: Monday - Friday 12:30 - 9 pm.  Call our studio and schedule an appointment for your first private lesson and we'll take it from there.

What do lessons cost?

We have many programs available. Most individuals begin with one of our Introductory programs or one of our starter programs.

Do I need a partner?

No. Here at Dancesmiths' Fred Astaire Dance Studios we teach both singles and couples. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for your private lesson. Couples can either take their lessons separately due to their personal schedules or take together as a couple being coached by one of our certified professionals. Our Practice Parties and Group Classes provide plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals.

What is a Private Lesson?

Private Instruction with one or more key teachers provides each student with the specialized and personalized attention necessary to develop the ability to lead or follow a partner. These lessons provide the most benefit and ease for learning to dance since all material is catered to the individual's learning ability and desire.

What is a Class Lesson?

A Class Lesson consists of several students learning from one instructor. Students work primarily on techniques on how to practice on their own.

What is a Practice Party?

Our practice parties prepare you for dancing socially. Our students attend to have fun and dance. At our parties, we dim the lights and have a fabulous time. This gives our students the opportunity to meet other students and apply material learned on their private lessons without the pressure of the public’s eye on them. Our parties are not only for the advanced student but also for the new student because all parties are guided by our Fabulous Instructors.

Where will I use my dancing after my lessons?

Everywhere! Fred Astaire Dance Studios will guide you in any dance situation. Although many students come to us initially to learn for a special occasion, for example, a wedding, cruise, bar mitzvah, Doctor's Ball, etc., they find many other times for dance in their personal lives. Some dance at picnics, on the beach, at birthday parties, in their living room and the list goes on and on. Until you take the first step to learn, it is hard to imagine the many times you will "step out" into a dance situation.

How should I dress for my lesson?

Wear something comfortable that won't inhibit movement. Of course, comfortable shoes are recommended. We suggest leather soles and not running shoes. However our students love to dress up for their lessons.

How long before I am comfortable in a dance situation?

That depends on you! Everyone has a different sense of comfort.  It is virtually impossible to learn how to play the piano or guitar in just a couple of hours, no matter how good you desire to be. You will not be socially comfortable in ballroom dancing in 2 lessons either. We will welcome any challenge and you can expect nothing but the best and quickest result from all of the instructors.
